Let's be honest no movie base on a book is going to be %100 like the book, events, scenes and characters get dropped for time, story flow or other reasons. But most often they stay pretty close to the source material, you might not like some of the things dropped or changes made but in the end it's cool seeing a favorite book of yours on the silver screen.
And then there's the times where they don't even seem to read the source material or don't give a damn, then there's the time it's unrecognizable except for the title and names of characters. The times where there are so many liberties taken with the source material you become a feral rage monster. You all have seen some example so list your picks for biggest offenders here.
My pick has got to be The Hobbit movies, they added so much extra crap and invented characters and storylines for no apparent reason except to extend the movie into three films so they can milk as much money out of it as possible. Seriously? Three movies? Each almost three hours long? Adding an Orc warlor for no reason and don't get me started on the hot elf chick they just threw in. And Legolass? Why? He's not supposed to be in the story. I'd have been fine with a quick cameo but the screen time he gets is ridiculous.
After Unexpected journey I absoloutely refuse to see the second part.
Anyways I'll shut up about The Hobbit. Now it's your turn to post which movies screwed up their source material unforgivably.

There was a show called Flashforward. Years later I found the audio book at the library (not knowing it was a book) and the book was 100 times better. The TV show was great but they had to add in FBI agents and a conspiracy to get the excitement up. The book was so scientific and philosophical, that it was probably too intelligent for the television audiences.
Not to mess up your thread Mercenaryblade, but the more challenging question is to find a tv show or movie that is better than the book.

I'm not really knocking the Peter Jackson films (mainly 'cuz I haven't seen them yet), but somehow I doubt they have a scene like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y30LAj502mY

One look at that new Jack Ryan movie and I was already annoyed as hell. Why the hell would you create a original story when you have all of Tom Clancy's books you could pull from? One of the greatest writers ever and you do that? No wonder Tom Clancy wasn't a fan of his books being adapted. Oh and that Jack Ryan movie with Captain Kirk I see is getting bad reviews. I read the problems with the film and I have no interest in seeing it. You can tell from trailers what it's all about.
Dracula- Their have been so many bad tv and film adaptions of this character its been butchered beyond belief. Hopefully the tv show is a success. I haven't watched a episode yet.

Fun fact: J.R.R. Tolkien might have been thinking about redoing the Hobbit so that it would better fit with his LOTR trilogy. But he never got around to it. So you COULD say that the new movies are trying to do what Tolkien wanted to do. And it does make sense for Legolas to be there, he's Thranduil's son even in the books. Even if Tolkien didn't show him, he would have been there. However, I do understand that the movies are not without flaws. Tauriel is cool but is a bit shoehorned it. The first movie took a while to get started. And maybe Peter Jackson didn't have to add SO much extra stuff into these films. But let's be honest: Fromn Ian McKellan's awesome portrayal of Gandalf, Andy Serkis once again owning the role of Gollum, Bilbo not looking like a frog, friggin' Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, and addressing the story of the Necromancer/Sauron the new movies have many more awesome moments than the Rankin Bass film. But hey, that's just my opinion

I loved the Hobbit films. I think Jackson added more for the general audience and to better explain it for them. I didn't read the books so I don't know how much they added.

Unless it's anime, I really haven't watched many cartoons, for the past decade or so.. Is Avatar an anime? I always thought it was made here, in America, so I just kinda passed on watching it. :/

B-but my PS3! ;w; Between that and my Vita, I've even quit watching Toonami. Way behind on Soul Eater, Sword Art, and Bleach. :/
