The site's been a bit quiet lately. UNACCEPTABLE! Let's change that with a hearty dose of rage. FRIGGIN' HOLLYWOOD AND THEIR REMAKES. The new Robocop coming out next year, yet another unnecessary remake of another Paul Verhoeven film. Remaking Total Recall wasn't enough? Anyway, just for fun let's talk about our least favorite (or favorite) remakes, why they are our least favorite/favorite, and just for the hell of it let's pitch our own ideas for a remake of a beloved classic. For example: GONE WITH THE WIND STARRING NICOLAS CAGE AND LINDSAY LOHAN Or DISNEY'S STAR WARS

From director Michael Bay... Starring Hayden Christensen and Megan Fox... Based on the original classic... CASABLANCA!
This time with more offensive stereotypes of German, French, and African alike! More sex, more senseless comedy, and if you thought the color was over-saturated in Transformers 2, than you haven't seen anything yet!

Frankly, Hollywood shouldn't do any remakes. If they want to do a remake, take the underlying concept of the film they're looking at, and re-imagine it with a different brand...
For example the 1951 movie "The Thing from another world", was the basis for the brilliant 1982 remake simply called "The Thing"... which was later remade again and suffered from a form of adaptation decay, the key factor between them, was that the 2011 was pretty much trying to Remake the original, there was nothing added to the concept to make it stand out and be something As good or Better.
That's why Remakes are utter crap, while re-imaginings generally do Much Better.

But it did come across as a remake since, as you said, they didn't add anything new (minus a look inside the alien ship before it's blown up).

Also all three films are adaptations of the short story Who goes there? By John W Campbell, the 1982 film is actualy probably the closest to the original story. Just a fun trivia

Since we are speaking of remakes. Hollywood has killed the character of Dracula. My god for some reason they constantly continue to try to remake Dracula in all sorts of ways. It needs to stop. That's the one that is just getting stupid now.
I'm sorry but that Total Recall remake was actually good along with Dredd and the Robocop remake looks great. Lets hope the film actually is good and that's not just a good trailer.

And as for the Total Recall remake, I have mixed feelings about that one. On one hand, I did enjoy it. But on the other hand it just wasn't necessary. Dredd was ABSOLUTELY necessary, and I still hope we get a sequel. Robocop? I'm a little exasperated, but hoping for the best. I'll wait for the reviews to come out from fans AND critics, then I'll decide whether I see it.

I have to admit, I'm fairly hopeful for a Disney Star Wars.
Lucas has great ideas, but when he tries to exert any kind of control over those ideas, he turns them to shit.
Disney has the money, and the vision, to hire proper producers and directors, to create a Star Wars sequel saga, which could be just as influential as the original saga was when it was released.

I share your optimism But imagine if they went a bit too far and actually REMADE the originals, with the kind of watered down crap you'd see on Disney XD or in Planes. I shudder at the thought of an Ewok Chewbacca or a musical number all about the Force...
