Alter ego: Felicity "Chance" Fortune
Origin: Felicity Fortune was born to a young middle-class couple living in the village of Cheddar, a large rural community in the county of Somerset in England. For all intents and purposes her life was rather unremarkable, although that was because the girl was back then too young to remember that her family went through rather hard times shortly before her birth. Her parents were law-abiding, honest and hardworking normal folk - her father ran a bakery in town, a business that he'd inherited from the father before him, which (according to her father) had been passed down the Fortune family line since the 1910's. While not exactly well-off, in a rural community comprised of close-knit families that'd practically known and lived alongside one another for generations meant that the Fortune bakery was never short of regular customers, ensuring a steady income and a rather comfortable living.
The Fortune couple's fortunes would ironically turn around just shortly before Felicity was born; seeing that their family was about to get bigger, the still-young couple decided that it was time that they built a nest egg for themselves, to ensure a better lifestyle for themselves and soon-to-be born child. And being a young couple in their late 20's, they made some rather hasty and ill-advised investment choices that resulted in them ending up dirt-poor; they lost their family business and wound up mired in debt, leaving them to struggle just to get by, much less to raise a child - it was a hard time for the Fortunes, although being just born back then Felicity had no memory of this chapter in her family history.
Then shortly after Felicity's 4th birthday, the Fortune family's luck took on another turn; starting with her father being approached by a lawyer one day with the revelation that he had a distant relative who'd recently passed away and for inexplicable decided to name him as the sole heir of his sizable fortune - which was enough to pay off his debt, essentially enabling them to start anew. The family's luck continued to pick up, as beginning anew but this time with experience and wisdom under their belt they were able to gradually rebuild their fortune with a series of prudent and carefully-planned investments and careful savings, such that by the time Felicity could remember her earliest childhood memories, she was thoroughly convinced that she'd always grown up in a well-to-do family, as not only did her parents manage to buy back the Fortune bakery, but even managed to expand the business into a chain of bakeries across first Somerset county, then the Sedgemoor district and eventually all over England and the rest of the UK.
As for Felicity herself, she grew up to be a prodigy - at school she never failed to get excellent grades, and performed remarkably in sports... or really any skill she put her heart into, such as picking up Japanese by watching anime and buying self-help books at learning the Japanese language. Effectively speaking, Felicity was one of those who seemed to breeze through life - succeeding without ever trying really hard, and seemingly getting whatever she wants, anytime, anywhere. Suffice to say, this didn't come without its downsides. The way life seemed to hand just about everything to her on a silver platter hasn't made Felicity the most worldly or strategically-minded of individuals, often adopting a rather happy-go-lucky, fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants outlook and approach to life, which earned her the moniker "Chance" from her peers, due to her tendency to "leave it to chance", which incidentally also became something of a catch phrase of hers. At its worst, it tends to manifest as a mental form of tunnel vision, where the moment Felicity sets her mind on doing something, she has a tendency to become totally focused on it, sometimes to the point of spacing-out from the rest of the world. (
Note: Physically she doesn't suffer from actual tunnel vision in her eyes, it's a metaphor to describe the eccentricities in her attention span, whereby she can range from having her head in the clouds, to being so focused on a detail that she fails to notice the big picture around her.)
Despite her privileged upbringing however, Felicity shys away from typical "Alpha Bitch" behavior, having learned from an early age that failure and rejection are but a temporary setback for her, and in the end things will still work out for the best for her; and often enough, she's right in this regard - and because of that is a rather quick to forgive and forget after sudden, short-lived bursts of anger - having a lifetime of smooth sailing still means that she isn't someone who takes setbacks well, although she is also just as quick to bounce back from them rather than brood over it. An optimist at heart, Felicity naturally sees the best in people, and as such is fascinated by the complexities of humanity, being quick to initiate conversation to better learn about others, and is naturally tactful and sensitive of others' feelings. Being an upbeat individual however, Felicity also has a tendency to avoid negativity however, and as such tends to shy away from overly pessimistic, argumentative or confrontational people. This doesn't mean she is a weak-willed or easily-swayed girl though, being one who subscribes to the adage that just because one chooses to keep quiet and walk away, it doesn't mean the other guy has won, but rather it just mean it isn't worth her time; although this has another downside of manifesting itself as passive-aggressive tendencies, making it difficult at times to read her mood.
Overall, Felicity is a good-natured and kind-hearted girl just looking to enjoy life and pursue her dreams; and shortly after her 14th birthday her parents moved to the area near Reach Island, partially due to new outlets in the business opening in the region, and partly due to them purchasing a waterfront villa at the coastal city overlooking Reach Island. In addition, it was believed that her charmed life to date was all due to her having an uncanny ability to manipulate luck, and as such Felicity found an invitation being extended to her by the Reach Island authorities to attend their high school. Which suited her fine anyway, as long as she could still enjoy her privileged lifestyle, make friends, and pursue her dreams as a pop idol and actress.
Affiliation: Hero. For simplicity's sake anyways. Technically a "civilian" despite her powers since she doesn't fancy herself as superhero material or sees herself donning a costume to go on a crusade against crime. But is otherwise a decent person who will try to do the right thing, and has a clean record with the law.
Public status: Mystery Vigilante. Just a normal civilian with no criminal records, but neither does she have a reputation as a crime fighter or some other heroic figure.
Appearance:Costume: None; but has a large wardrobe of fashionable street clothes and anime cosplay outfits.
Primary power:Positive Energy Field - Felicity's upbeat and cheerful attitude allows her to project an aura of what could only be termed as "Positive Energy" around her, an invisible field that subtly raises her allies' chances of success. To start, anyone within 30 meters of Felicity, so long as they have no ill intents toward her will experience a general feeling of confidence and calm. In effect, this provides a slight morale-based buff to their skill performance (anything that requires concentration - such as aiming, as well as requiring effort such as exertion, as the feeling of confidence triggers the body to secrete performance-enhancing hormones) by allowing them to overcome their fear and feelings of inadequacy. The effects of her aura are not merely psychological however, as the physical effects of said field also eases physical pain and discomforts, and conveys a slight improvement in her allies' natural recuperative abilities, in addition to improving their statistical odds - i.e. they have better chances of scoring lucky shots with their weapons and/or powers, being in the right place at the right time to either ambush an enemy or not be in harm's way, etc. The potency of this buff is doubled for any ally that Felicity is actively supporting. (i.e. cheering for them, offering encouragement, etc.)
(
Author's Note: To put it in generic pen and paper RPG terms, her Positive Energy Field is basically like a buff that grants her and allies within its area of effect bonuses to their general skill performance, saving throws, evasion and accuracy, as well as providing minor regeneration of lost hit points.)
Again, this ability is not without its drawbacks, as the Positive Energy Field remains active only for as long as Felicity herself retains her positive state of mind. Any emotional insecurities such as feelings of fear, hopelessness or doubt on Felicity's part will completely shut down her aura, negating any of the buffs it provides. Also, any being that is incapable of emotion will not be affected by the Positive Energy Field, and as such will gain no benefits from it.
(
Author's Note: Ultimately whether your character is affected by her Positive Energy Field or not is left completely up to your own discretion.)
Secondary power:A Charmed Life (Luck) - Simply put, Felicity is simply born lucky. She wasn't sure how or why, but it couldn't have been merely a coincidence when shortly after her fourth birthday her parents went from being mired in debt and teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, to millionaires in less than a decade - when they'd previously been middle-class for generations. Without herself knowing it, her power substantially improves the odds of her succeeding, whatever her definition of "success" is, so long as it involves statistical probability. To illustrate, assuming she was handed an opaque jar filled with 100 marbles - one black amongst 99 white ones and asked to retrieve the black marble without being allowed to see into the jar (thus searching blindly), she would be able to retrieve the black marble every single time. Simply put, it's the ability to defy statistic improbabilities and seemingly succeed in situations with chances as low as 1%. There are limitations to her ability however - firstly, she needs to remain unaware of the statistical odds for the power to take effect; i.e. she doesn't think about how improbable or difficult the task at hand is. And secondly, the miracle in question must have a statistical probability of occurring, even if it is a slight one; such as if someone were to try to shoot at her with a pistol, a miracle might occur in that the weapon may suddenly fail, or the attacker may sneeze and screw up his aim, or she may trip over her feet and fall down just before the trigger is pulled, thus moving herself out of harm's way. Outright supernatural miracles or divine intervention, such as twelve legions of angels swooping down to her rescue, are impossible even for her ability.
Equipment:-armor: Nada
-weapons: None technically, unless you count the bokken (wooden sword) she uses for her kendo club practices as a weapon.
