Hello. While some of you either don't know me, most of you won't remember me either. I was in the Electric Ferret website long ago when it was still up and rocking, and I made some fight there. Some not so good, while others decent.
I'm here to say that while FoxFingers is still retired, I think we need someone with his kind of expertise and knowhow so we could possibly get a new version of that website, or this one, into something similar or even better by comparison.
I think with stuff like Death Battle, mugen as well as Super Power Beat Down, fantasy battles are still something people can make forums of, just like with Electric Ferret.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm rambling, but the fact is this place is dead. It's beyond dead, it's already decomposed. Most of us have been away for one reason or another, and because of that it's been a deserted wasteland. I mean yeah, most of us have grown up or gained a life outside of this stuff, or just gained other interests, but places like Electric Ferret were something unique that is hard to look for anything similar to that, especially with how the website was built.
We need to get that kind of community up and running again, as I sorely miss it. Forums like this are unfortunately dead unless it's a wikipage, and I think we can bring something like that back, but in a website form instead of forum form.
Like the Electric Ferret.
Instead of one guy though, we should try and look for a group of people interested in doing something like it so we can keep the place alive even if the head honcho decides to retire like last time and just leave it as an archive, giving it to the next guy and the next and so on.
Entertainment media has grown ever since our own departure from this forum and with the archival of Electric Ferret. I think it's time that website, or something much similar or better, should come back.

We all share the blame with this site dying. It happens and it is sad. Sad because we can't get back what we lost.
That being said, why can't just a dedicated group of us buy the Electric Ferret website and relaunch it? Maybe do a Kickstarter to get it up and running?

A good question, but from what I can remember and look up, the creator of the Electric Ferret website didn't want to pass the website onto another person. Why he didn't want to is beyond me and has remained a mystery ever since then. Because of this, I don't think he'll be willing to sell the site to anybody unless he's convinced well enough.
Also with Kickstarter, that's sadly another thing I don't think will help. It's worth a try, but many are either waiting for the next Death Battle or just look up fanfiction. I mean another Electric Ferret would be amazing and would be as successful as the previous one, but if we are to either somehow get the original site up and running again or make another one from scratch with the same assets and code, we would need to put lots of work into it.

I'm not hearing you say it can't be done. I agree that a revival would be successful, but I don't see how we could do it without either the original site or an exact copy. And I wouldn't want to make a copycat site without first consulting the OG creator. Honestly, I need the distraction from work. |

I would also like the EF Discord, would be nice to catch up with people.
If the reboot happens I say keep the roster but reset the records. Also allow people to add new characters with the old system of them being reviewed.

I think if this does revive, merch as well as maybe some patreon rewards can help it stay afloat and possibly a stream or two talking about certain matchups as well as tournaments with the settings and conditions talked about before the result hare counted. With how time has passed, there are now more ways to earn money than just traffic to help leave the site up and bring more people.

So I managed to get in contact with the guy that was in charge of the original CBUB, or better known as Electric Ferret, and he managed to email me back just the next day. Here is what his response was.
"Hey, long time, no chat - good to hear from you. Hope you are doing well.
The interactive features of Electric Ferret (The FPL and CBUB) are
really an artifact of a simpler time. I'm sure there are much cooler
sites out there these days.
It still all works. It's just on ice, so to speak. A relic frozen in
amber on the Interwebs. It doesn't require a Kickstarter or anything.
You can still visit it. It's just non-interactive, now.
Here's the thing, the Internet itself is a very different place than
when I created FPL / CBUB and there are certain legal responsibilities
one assumes by having a site that tends to attract a younger audience.
Also, I don't know that it is possible for that kind of freewheeling
creative community to exist, now. It's kind of a different world.
Also I'm on to other things. So I don't have the time or inclination to
deal with it, really. I have other priorities.
So, that's what's going on with it. Running a website is kind of a lot
of worry and difficult for one person.

Folks, I have had a blissful few years of not having to worry about running an Interactive website.
I don't think you know what a hassle and a liability it is to have one. It really is.
CBUB/FPL can't really be "given away". It's all custom programming. It would take a very dedicated soul with a particular programming skill set who was also willing to spend hours upon hours for free dealing with the code, the maintenance and the bullshit of people using the site.
right?
So, I guess if you say it is a unique site then clearly that's why. It's not easy to either create or admin such a thing.
It comes with a lot of liability and little reward.
All that said, I'm surprised anyone is still holding a candle for it after all these years.
I am conflicted.
I guess if you miss playing around on the site after all this time we can work something out.
I have zero (ZERO) interest in moderating a social forum. And I need to limit my liability. Would require moderators who would enforce non-negotiable requirement on acceptable content.
