He couldn’t shake the insult of feeling like a hired thug, but the promise that was offered to Jafar was too tantalizing to refuse. The
secret to immortality and increased magical power.
As if to subconsciously rebut his hurt pride, he put word out for hired help.
A Russian assassin named Bayman was the first to respond to his ad.
An American named Simon Phoenix came onboard.
There was great irony in the fact that he had no Asians for an operation taking place in China, but he was willing to work with what
he had. Perhaps he could recruit some local talent once they got there. In fact, he would definitely recruit one.
From the beginning of China’s unification on, the emperor always had a personal chief. His cooking was never less than fabulous and
his kung fu was on par with any of the soldiers. The title didn’t arise for generations, but eventually the emperor’s personal chief came
to be branded the King of Chefs’. Although China no longer had an emperor, the legacy of the King of Chiefs continued to the present
day.
Currently, that title belonged to a man named Lau Chan. He was past his golden years. And he had not trained a successor. His only
daughter, Pai had gone into Hong Kong cinema which did not bother him. The King of Chefs carried just as much cruelty and
misfortune as it did honor and tradition. Lau was coming to accept the demise of the legacy at the moment of his passing.
Besides, hardly anyone even knew of his designation. People just liked his food.
He noticed an expensively dressed Arab man coming into his restaurant but just as quickly forgot him. People from all over the world
came to enjoy Lau Chan’s royal delicacies.
Even being called out to the Arab man’s table was a regular incident. It happened at least once a day.
“King of Chefs.” The man began. He spoke properly, and impressively, in Mandarain. “My name is Jafar. I have need of your
knowledge.”
Taken aback at the use of his title, Lau Chan waited for the Arab to explain.
“Your predecessors served the Chinese emperors until the end of the empire. But certainly, secrets were passed down. I wonder if
you know of the location of the Dragon Emperor.”
Lau Chan physically drew back. He composed himself and responded.
“What interest do you have in the Dragon Emperor?”
Jafar smiled sadistically. Oh King of Chefs, with the Dragon Emperor lies power.”
“With the Dragon Emperor lies a curse.” Lau warned.
With a scoff, Jafar leaned forward slightly. “I have the spells to control the curse.”
“There are no such spells.” Said Lau.
“On the contrary,” Jafar murmured. “There are.”
Filling Lau’s quiet, Jafar strengthened his case. “I have men, I have means. All that I need is a guild.”
“You are on an unwise quest.”
“It sounds as if you are refusing help me.”
“Even more, I am seeking to dissuade you.”
“Then you leave me no choice but to insist you tell me what I want to know.”
Jafar didn’t bring a group of men like he wanted to. Alarming the authorities would be too much trouble and distraction. He had
preferred to bring Simon Phoenix as his enforcer but his work was too sloppy and would certainly, draw unwanted attention. The
Russian, Bayman, had the professionalism to do his job quietly.
He rose from his meal and approached.
Lau never actually looked at him. He knew what was coming and waited for his enemy to attack.
