Scrat
Scrat is a fictional character from the Ice Age franchise. He is a sabre-tooth squirrel whose obsession with acorns is always used to comedic effect in the franchise's various films, shorts, specials, and video games. He is also the mascot of Blue Sky Studios, the company that produces the Ice Age franchise. Scrat is voiced by Chris Wedge.
Scrat is a sabre-toothed squirrel who is obsessed with collecting acorns, constantly putting his life in danger to obtain and defend them. He has his own stories in the films which are mostly independent of those of the main characters, though the two do intersect at times.
In a special feature in the Ice Age: The Meltdown's DVD, his name has been stated to be a mix of the words "squirrel" and "rat", his species allegedly believed to have been a common ancestor of both. In the Ice Age DVD commentary, he is referred to as "The Scrat" by directors Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha.
During the days of the ice age, Scrat took an acorn with him everywhere, hoping to find a place to store it for the winter. Scrat also went out looking for other acorns so as to further his storage, looking all over for acorns and nuts.
Scrat went on fixated with taking his acorn until he met another saber-tooth squirrel named Scratte, who Scrat fell for, forsaking his acorn for a time until he grew to miss it and returned to his acorn, leaving Scratte behind in a world of dinosaurs.
Further on in time, through a mistake, Scrat was responsible for the separation of the continents, which divided Pangaea, the singular landmass, into various continents. After this, Scrat found a paradise on Earth for himself: an island populated by advanced saber-tooth squirrels known as Scratlantis. After finding it, however, Scrat sunk it by mistake, stranding himself in a North American desert.
A hapless saber-tooth squirrel, Scrat underwent a number of odd experiences through his life, all while trying to store a single acorn to make it through the ice age. Scrat was protective of his acorn to the point in which he would gladly risk his own life to keep it safe from others or from harm.
