Inspirations behind the design of Shao Kahn:
Shao Kahn's traditional attire appears to be jointly inspired by the clothing of ancient Roman gladiators and Japanese samurai.
Inspirations behind the design of Nightwolf:
Nightwolf's design was heavily inspired by other Native American characters in fighting games during the 1990s, such as Thunder Hawk from "Super Street Fighter II" and Chief Thunder from "Killer Instinct", but he was purposefully supposed to have more mystical powers than them.
