Smoke's initial appearances were nothing to write home about, but his expanded role in Mortal Kombat 9 combined with the new design he got in that game seemed to have resulted in a larger fan following for the character. I think that part of the appeal for some people is that Smoke had it rougher than a lot of the other characters but remained a good guy until he got killed and brought back as a revenant. Jacqui's not a bad character, but her fighting style is really dull.
