Hell had been a boring place.
That was until Death had made some much needed changes. Like, for instant, giving quality entertainment to the soulless masses.
Death had decided that a tournament would achieve this goal. He picked sixteen newly-arrived tenants and put them against each other with the promise of getting their souls back. If they won, of course.
The combatants didn't have much of a choice in the matter. They had to fight, and so they did. And as the battles progressed, the audience grew. Thousands of ghouls, stormtroopers, wildlings, nazis, and demons gathered to watch the carnage unfold.
The tournament dwindled down until five remained. And then those five became two. And before those two could continued their battle, Death called an end to the fight. Death's faithful pet crow, Dust, had flown in and perched himself on his master's shoulder. Dust communicated with Death in a way that no other two could, and then afterward, Death exhaled.
"Time's up, I suppose," Death said to himself, rising from his chair and calling an end to the match.
"Good show, boys. It's been real entertaining," Death said as he began to walk away. The crowd didn't seem happy about the abrupt end to their entertainment.
"Hold up now," Erron Black said, voicing the frustrations of himself and the crowd, "You ain't going nowhere until I get what's mine. We had a deal."
"Yeah, a deal!" Sir Daniel Fortesque muttered incoherently.
"Right," Death turned, holding up an amulet filled with the souls of the competitors. He glared at it for a moment then put his attention on the unsettled crowd. Death weighed his options.
"If you're so anxious to have it, then come and get it," Death laughed as he summoned his twin scythes before him.
Erron Black looked to Sir Daniel, his enemy just moments ago, and gave the skeletal man a subtle nod. He'd hope that Daniel would get the hint that, for now, they had a common interest. Beat the holy hell out of the guy who pitted them against each other in the first place.
To Erron's delight, Daniel returned the nod and picked his Golden Shield up off the ground. Erron reloaded his revolver and twirled his gun.
The duo charged Death... and the crowd roared.
