I best know him for the Scream movies(which apparently are his most successful films, according to Wikipedia; Nightmare On Elm Street barely even cracks the top 10, with the 3rd movie at #9). But damn, that's a real shame..

He literally is one of the kings of horror in films. Scream and the Nightmare on Elm Street films are in my top 5 favorite horror franchises of all time. R.I.P Wes Craven.

I could make a traditional slasher villain Battle Royale-style match to honour Craven.

But damn, that's a real shame.. Heh, I still remember in Scream 3 when Ghostface threw a knife at David Arquette's character, only for him to be knocked out when the knife's handle hit him in the head instead of the blade. Kind of hilarious. So okay, maybe a match can be made with Freddy Kruger and some of the Scream characters.

Wiki is the most unreliable thing to go to. Anybody can edit and change those things.

Where would you go to confirm something like that, then? But that's why I said it was from there; knew there was a possibility it wasn't completely accurate. Not to mention Nightmare On Elm Street is pretty old, yeah? Got to take into account inflation.
