Shōyō Hinata

Hinata was watching one of Karasuno High's matches when he saw the Small Giant in play.

Like him, the Small Giant lacked height, but he was able to jump extremely high and defeat tall blockers; this inspired Hinata to start playing volleyball.

He joined the volleyball club in his middle school, but he was the only member.

However, Hinata refused to give up and would practice by himself at the corner of the gymnasium, off to one side of the sports ground, or in the hallways.

In Hinata's third year of junior high, three first years joined the volleyball club.

Despite having new members, Hinata still lacked enough players to form a team so he asked his friends to help out.

His friends, Izumi and Koji, joined Hinata's team and they soon attended their first volleyball tournament.

However, Yukigaoka's first opponent turned out to be Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High, the tournament favorite.

While everyone thought that Yukigaoka would lose, Hinata remained convinced that his team would win.

Before the match started, Hinata went to the bathroom and got into an argument with some Kitagawa Daiichi members which led to Hinata meeting Kageyama Tobio, Kitagawa’s “King of the Court”.

The two argued with each other right away and both announced that they would defeat each other.

Hinata announces that he will defeat Kageyama one day.

When the match started, Hinata jumped high to spike, shocking Kageyama.

Kageyama noticed Hinata's incredible stamina, jumping power, and pure determination to win, and gained a bit more respect for him.

Hinata managed to take some points from Kitagawa Daiichi but in the end, Yukigaoka lost.

The number of sets Hinata's team won was 0 and the match only lasted 31 minutes.

Hinata remembered Kageyama's name and his title as the "King of the Court".

After the match, Hinata approached Kageyama and announced that he will overthrow the setter from his title.

Kageyama accepted his challenge, but told him to grow stronger first.

After that, Hinata trained rigorously by jogging, practicing with the girls’ volleyball team, and joining the neighborhood mothers' team.

Hinata currently lives in Yukigaoka with his mother and sister.

He started high school in Karasuno and joined the volleyball club.

He travels to Karasuno each morning by a 30-minute bike ride through the mountains.
