How are we going to sort this out? I haven't seen anything in any other threads about mythical creatures and if they exist in the universe we're building.
As far as I'm at liberty (creative-wise) to mandate, I think they should be spawns of a character with powers that are on the Powers List, be they global or street-level. Not that we would have to quantify their points in the story, but give them something to compare our characters to.
For example. dragons could be (as I mentioned in my most recent character's analysis post) a character who has Transformation Level 4 or Creation Level 4, etc.
Or we could discount their existence altogether. However, I think this would take some of the fun out of worldbuilding. Since we're going with the whole "ancient gods/heroes/legends" thing, might as well have the beasties they fight, eh?

A lot of the things I've been working on here have both magic and science. I'm not a big fan of Magic being advanced science; so if my characters encounter a dragon they are probably fighting the real deal. Not to say that some dragons and gods can't be the result of science.

Would we write out AU according to their existence as we go or as a part of the general backstory?

In the last bit I wrote, for the contest, I made a vague mention to a council of mythical beings. I'm all down for including these in the world we're building, but I still have a view of a world that doesn't fully accept their existence. "So what we have supers flying around, that doesn't mean mermaids exist!" Is what I envision to be the view of most of public. I think there should be a barrier between the fairyland and humans, but that's just what I've been working on.
I think if we do include them, and they're not characters, it wouldn't really matter how we quantify their powers.
What do you mean write out AU?

I have something similar in the works that heavily relies on Little Lovecraft and Janus Valley. Characters such as The Effigy, Dirge have the seeds to that in the sheets but just as Darkender said, the general public don't know that much about the metaphysical world yet (in my writing anyway.). The Hounds Of Justice are the ones who I'll have deal with the occult most of the time.

As in incorporate mythical beasts/men into history, to fit their existence, rather than act as if they only recently started existing with this being written as general backstory rather than unraveling the history on a character-to-character basis. Also, I like that explanation.
