“Look Galaxy, you don’t understand, this guy’s going to come after me, and I just need a little muscle to back me up.”
“Ace you have to tell me who you ripped off, or I can’t help you.”
Danny ‘Ace’ Gibbons was a thief of some renown. But he had been stopped four weeks ago in an attempt to drive off with an armored panel van full of imported cigars, when a young super heroine had simply flipped the truck onto its side and pulled him out of the driver’s side window. He now came back to her for help.
He chain smoked and paced back and forth, leaving cigarette butts littered on the gravel floor of the rooftop.
“Its just this guy,” he said, “Look, he gave me the power to interact with machines through magnetism.”
“Is that how you got into the armored van?”
“Yes, ok, yes, I did that. It was bad, I get it. But he wanted a cut of that which I couldn’t give him because,” he sighed and remembered that it would be best not to blame her if he was asking for help.
“Look, after the cigar job went south he said I could make it up to him if I helped him with something else. He wanted a small ship pulling into Reach Harbor; he wanted it hijacked and piloted to a small wharf at the other end of the city. I didn’t ask any questions and I agreed. Last night I managed to take the ship while the crew was docking.
But about thirty minutes in I had to take a leak, so I went below deck and I caught a glimpse of the cargo. I could have handled drugs, or guns, but it’s just... It was people, Galaxy. Comatose people in little plastic boxes. The fucker was either trading in, or stealing from someone who was trading in people.”
“O.k. Ace, you need to calm down a bit; I need to know where they are now.”
He raced a hand through his hair.
“The boat’s stashed somewhere off the coast, but that doesn’t matter. It’s been like eight hours since I went missing and he’ll know; this guy, you don’t know this guy, he’s gonna find me.”
“He won’t find you,” Galaxy Girl told him, “and if he does, he’ll have to go through me first, and I don’t let people hurt anyone I’ve got behind me. But right now, if you want to make this right, you have to take me to where you stashed the boat.”
He shook his head.
“If he hasn’t found it already he’ll be there soon. He has people.”
“Yeah, I get that. That’s why you need to tell me where it is. People’s lives depend on this Ace. Come on, we can do this.”
She smiled like it was nothing. He took one last drag and told her.
