The year was 2062. The world had changed drastically over the last 50 years. Many of the world's heros had either died or retired. The grave threats that had plagued the world had faded. Most threats could now be handled by the local authorities. Every now and then people would catch a glimpse of a long ago hero here or there but never for long. Times have changed and with it the worlds dependency on the heros of yesteryear.
As the dawn began to rise, thunder could be heard in the distance. The morning continued as usual with traffic and people hurrying about their daily lives. The city seemed at peace, without a real care or worry. As cars marched like ants down the freeway an explosion erupted in the distance. Citizens watched in horror as a skyscraper came crashing down. The debris was raining down from above crushing everything below. A dust cloud rose above the skyline and spread through the streets. Hal Jordan was alerted by his ring of the disturbance while he sat in his emrald fortress. Flying into Metropolis all that could be seen was a streal of green light. While at his age physically Hal was whithering, his will was as strong as ever. Lighting his was with the ring he searched carefully for survivors. Landing next to a pile rubble, he lifted beams away to reveal a man unharmed minus a few scratches. When the man looked at Hal he seemed terrified. Hal looked closer and realized the man wasn't looking at him but past him. The survivor could see a massive figure coming for them through the darkness.
Hal whipped around just in time to see a huge hand slam into his face. His mind flashed with pain, it took all he had to stay concious. Forming a hammer through sheer force of will. Hal swung with all he had connecting with the behemoth's head. The emrald structure shattered upon impact while the figure stood firm. By this time Wally West came streaking head long towards the monster. Time had taken its tole on Wally. His speed had begun to fade and slowed him down. The Hulk raised his leg and brought his foot down with such force that the street erupted. Wally was thrown through the air like a toy. Hulk caught Wally in mid air with one hand. From the dge of the dust cloud onlookers watched lightning strikes and emrald flashes combined with sonic booms. As the dust began to settle a disturbing site was broadcast by the newly arrived reporters. The giant figure was walking out of the dust dragging two lifeless bodies of two of the world's most famous heros; Green Lantern and the Flash. Arriving on site Diana was horrified by what she saw. Two of her long time friends dead at the hands of this monster. She charged headstrong, shield and sword in hand.
Bruce sat in the dark dampness of his cave, memorabilia throughout. He felt helpless in his old age. His friends were fighting and dying and he was stuck there. The days were long past that he was able to physically help in battle. Watching each crushing blow, each devastating strike on the monitorhis helplessness became more and more disheartening. Watching as Diana continued to fight a losing battle, the pride Bruce had began to faulter and break. He now felt his only choice would be to call for help from the man that abandoned them all. He swore he would never depend on him again after what had happened but now he had no choice. He had to call Kal-El.
(Bruce's flash back)
Its had been almost 50 years since we spoke. The day Superman failed was the last day they spoke. It seemed like a normal day but nobody noticed until it was too late. The Joker had decided to pay a visit to Metropolis one day. That was the day she died. Joker had planted a bomb at the Daily Planet just for kicks. He didn'd even make any demands, just senseless violence. Clark was handling a situation in space when he heard the explosion. He flew as fast as he could but it was too late. When he arrived the building was nothing but burning rubble. Tearing through debris, he found Lois' remains. Stricken with grief he cried out for the world to hear. Laying her body down gently Clark took off. Bursting through Belle Reeve he tore through rooms on his way to the Joker. Grabbing the laughing clown by the throat, he began to squeeze.
Joker- "You just don't have it in you to kill me do you blue boy do you? Thats what makes this so fun!"
Clark- "Never again!"
The ever present smile on Joker's face was replaced by a look of fear. He realized he had finally pushed to far. His eyes grew bigger as he felt Clark's grip get tighter until he felt something crack in his throat. Clark squeezed until the struggling clown stopped moving. When he was dead Clark simply dropped him and flew off. No one saw Clark at Lois' funeral but I know he was there. It was a closed casket funeral because the remains were not pleasant. Since that day no one had seen or heard from Clark.
Bruce still had the communicator device Clark had given him many years ago. Struggling with the thoughts on how he had broken there silent vow and killed the Joker and then just abandoned the entire world, he then picked up the communicator. Just the thoughts in Bruce's head made the device feel for lack of a better word... alien. Then looking back at the monitors he saw Diana trying with all she had. She continued to fight but to no avail, finally breaking her sword across the behemoth's massive shoulders. Bruce realized only one person would be able to stop this monster now. Thumbing the switch he activated the comlink to Clark's fortress.
Bruce- "Clark! Clark!... I know your their and I know you can hear me. We need your help!... CLARK! The past is the past. We need you now!"
Bruce's words seemed to go on with no response forever. Then suddenly...
Clark- "You all seemed to do just fine without me. You don't need me. The world has proven that over the years."
Bruce- "Stop whinning and listen... Hal and Wally are dead!"
Clark froze in shock, the two of them were near unstoppable together. Just hearing about there deaths brought back all the sadness and anger.
Bruce- "Diana is fighting but losing horribly. If you don't help her the only other woman you have ever cared about is going to die too! I know all these years couldn't have made you that cold hearted. What would your parents think of you now? What would Lois think?
That was the first time Clark had heard her name out loud in ages the pain was agonizing. With those final words the comlink went blank. All Bruce's hope faded along with the signal. Setting into motion he began scowering his data for any hero he could contact. On the monitor Bruce could see the Juggernaut holding a motionless Diana by the hair. Bringing back his fist it prepared to strike.
Suddenly a sonic boom ripped through the atmosphere heard through the northern hemisphere. As windows shattered the monster disappered in a blur. Diana was left battered and bruised on the ground. Bruce couldn't believe his eyes. His old friend had returned. In the back of his mind he was hoping Clark would do the right thing.
Kal-El stopped dragging the monster through the Earth when he reached the desert. He wanted to remove the possibility of more innocents being hurt. Clark felt ashamed and furious at the same time. After Bruce's words he realized how disappointed his family would have been. He knew he had to do whatever it took to set things right. This monster had killed his friends. Never again would he let someone die on his watch.
Clark- "I've stood by long enough. To many have been hurt because I was not there when they needed me. You killed my friends, for that you will pay. I have no reason to hold back out here. Now its time for all those who wish to do evil see what they have in store for them. Its time for me to stop holding back and do what I should have been doing from the start."
Clark clenched his fists and the veins in his arms began to bulge. His eyes started glowing a rimson red. Rising slightly into the air his cape fluttered for a moment just before he took off towards the monster that had killed his friends. It was time for him to be the hero Lois always knew he was.
