Even though there have only been two official Portal games made by Valve, the first of which was essentially a bonus project to accompany Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 in the Orange Box bundle, a great amount of effort and planning was put into each game, and not all of the ideas Valve had came to fruition.
Case in point, GLaDOS herself had a radically different original design. Instead of a looming, ceiling-attached mechanism with a small eye that we all recognise, GLaDOS originally was supposed to look like this:
Interestingly, the Portal fans have taken quite a liking to the concept GLaDOS design. This design was reused in the comedic, fan made Portal Machinima series that was on YouTube, The Underground, for the mysterious villain named the Mainframe.
In in the early stages of Portal 2, there was a completely different plot planned out. GLaDOS wasn't originally going to appear, as a different A.I. with a similar name was going to appear instead, GLaADOS. Little is known about the unmade character known as GLaADOS, or Betty, or what her connection to the original GLaDOS would have been.

Isn't that sweet? A thread all about me and how wonderful I am and how I came to be. It really is an interesting story.
Maybe one day one of you will have a backstory as interesting as mine...
Probably not, but it's nice to dream once in a while.
