This Luke Skywalker Theory Destroys Everything You Thought You Knew About 'Star Wars'One evening, while geeking out with my daughters I decided to share a theory I had with them about Star Wars -- specifically Return of the Jedi: Luke Skywalker turned to the Dark Side at the end of the trilogy.I shared this story with them because I think my theory is reinforced by trailer for the new movie:It's pretty exciting stuff, and to me, rather telling. Especially after you watch the first preview again. There's been a lot of speculation on Kylo Ren and the bad guys in general -- if you haven't heard any of it you surely will. As my friend Mike Moore put it:This, for me, is righting something that has never sat well with me: the oddball and underwhelming ending of Return of the Jedi.Luke Turned To The DarksideFor the full article look here. Then let me know what you think. It does seem pretty plausible in my opinion. This Luke Skywalker Theory Destroys Everything You Thought You Knew About 'Star Wars'

Yeah I keep seeing this theory online. Apparently people think Luke at the end of Return of Jedi was actually suppose to turn to the Dark Side because Yoda told him if he leaves the planet without finishing his training he will fall down the same path his father did. Also keep in mind Luke failed at the cave when it showed him Vader giving him a sign he would become like his father. The short point is at the end of Return of Jedi someone worked on the film said the original ending would give a hint or something Luke did fall to the Dark Side to save his friends and sister. However because Stars Wars had become so huge, the toys were taking off, and Lucas had started to change his focus he choose the happy ending. If you watch the ending of Return of Jedi he does seem a bit anger and tense similar to Anakin at the funeral in Episode One. Luke's path in the original theory was just like his father and he stood a even greater chance of falling then his father. He was a damn adult when Obi Wan and Yoda tried teaching him. Keep in mind Anakin as a kid was said to be too old to be trained as a Jedi and had a high chance of falling to the Dark Side.
However my problem with this theory which the article does not bring up and others are forgetting is Luke overcomes Sidious and the influence of the Dark Side when he choose not to strike down his father. Luke says with his own mouth I am a Jedi like my father before me. Everyone has completely forgot that important part. Luke was when he managed to turn his father back to the light and have him accomplish his destiny as the Chosen One to destroy the Dark Side had proven he had what it took to overcome the Dark Side to prove he could be a Jedi.

It does address that exact scene. He could have lied, just like he did a few other times in Return of the Jedi. (uncharacteristically compared to the first to movies)
Perhaps Luke felt he could rule the galaxy with his father at his side and needed to remove the emporer to do so. So he lied to throw the emperor off, since the emperor thought he had luke turned.

The Emperor would have known he was lying. Luke was not powerful enough to hide something like that from Sidious and cover he had turned to be honest.

There are plenty of problems with that theory.
1. The Emperor would have sensed it and commented on it.
2. Darth Vader would have sensed it and commented on it.
3. He wouldn't have been visited by the Force Ghosts of Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin, during Vader/Anakin's funeral, since they would have sensed it as well(being force ghosts, and thereby part of the Force itself).
4. His behavior doesn't fit with someone that has recently fallen to the Dark Side.
We have seen, both in the EU, as well as in canon, that Dark Side users tend to have one emotion as their major focus point in the Dark Side. For Anakin it starts out as Fear, and later it is Anger. For Palpatine it is Hate(the rarest of them). For Darth Maul it was Anger. For Dooku it was Anger.
We also see with Vader, that once that driving emotion disappears, they start coming back to the Light side(Hate being the only one that seems to be indicated as purely evil, with no hope of turning back).
For Vader, his focal point for a long time, was his anger at Obi-Wan, and to a lesser extent himself, for the death of Padmé and his unborn child(ren). This changed to anger towards the Emperor(for lying about their deaths), after Obi-Wan was killed. When the Emperor was finally killed, his remaining focal point for the Dark Side was gone, and he turned back to the Light side.
Luke has no such focal point. Early on, he could have had anger towards Vader, for supposedly killing his(luke's) father, but that would be gone once he finds out that Vader is his father. It could be towards the Emperor, for turning Anakin to the Dark side(which would explain Luke attempting to strike the emperor down), but once the Emperor is dead, even that focal point is gone.
While it seems plausible that he could have been leaning towards the Dark side for most of the last movie(ROTJ), there is absolutely nothing to indicate that he is still on the Dark side, after the death of the Emperor, while there are several indicators of Luke being firmly on the Light side at that point.
