Vin Venture rubbed her forehead, trying to get her headache to leave. She'd been getting a lot of headaches lately and the pain numbing powers of pewter weren't touching them. Not only that but the headaches had been sapping her energy. She'd spent a lot more time sleeping lately than usual.
“Another headache Vin?” Elend asked from across the table. The two of them shared a rather modest house in the fantasy district of Khazan. Vin gave her husband a weak nod.
“I have them almost constantly these days. Not even pewter helps. I don't know what's going on with me Elend.”
“Maybe you should go see Sazed. He might be able to help you with this problem. You look terrible Vin, like you haven't slept in weeks.” Elend said with concern.
“I've been doing almost nothing but sleeping. When I do I have the strangest dreams. Of people and places I've never seen before.. Things outside of the fantasy district. When I wake up the headaches get worse.”
“What happens in these dreams Vin?” She paused unsure about whether she should tell Elend about the content of her dreams. They could be quite... upsetting. Elend, having gotten to know her quite well seemed to sense her hesitation. “It's alright, you can tell me, whatever it is, we can get through it.”
Vin sighed and began to speak, if she couldn't trust Elend with this, who could she trust with it. “At first it just started with names, odd names that I'd never heard before. Galen, Dante, Adam, things like that. I didn't understand it; I still don't. Then, the images came, almost like memories but I know these things never happened, at least not in this life.”
“You think you're remembering things from a previous life? That doesn't sound like you Vin.” Elend said.
“I know, but these things seem too real to just be made up. I doubt I could have come up with a lightsaber on my own, or a Morpher.”
“What are you talking about Vin? You're not making any sense, what are those words?”
“They're things I saw in my dreams, weapons that don't exist here in the fantasy district and I've never been outside the district, you know that. How could I just make these things up? There's more Elend, but before I tell you that I need you to know that I love you.”
“I love you too, you can tell me anything.”
“In my dreams, there's a man. Galen Marek is his name, I'm married to him we had two children: Katie and Katrina, the details are a little fuzzy, but I know I loved him, we had a family. Those feelings are starting to go beyond the dreams.”
“Are you saying you want to leave me for some dream guy you're not even sure is real?” Elend asked, with hurt in his voice.
“I'm not saying that at all Elend. I'm just saying I'm confused. I feel like these dreams are something important. Something bad is coming. I can't explain how I know, but this world is wrong. I need answers and I'm pretty sure they will come when I find Galen and the other people from my dreams. I can't find them here, so, I need to go.”
“You're instincts are rarely wrong Vin, so if you feel this is important I believe you. I'll support you in whatever way you need. Just tell me when we're leaving and we can go.” Elend declared.
“We're not going anywhere Elend. This is something I have to do alone. You know how tight district security is. If I get caught I don't want you going down with me. I know it might be hard to do after everything I've told you, but you're going to have to trust me.” Elend hesitated a bit.
“I do trust you Vin, do what you have to do, just... be careful.”
“I will Elend.”
In the dead of night Vin made her way across the fantasy district. The night was her ally. She did her best work in the dark after all. She needed to get out of this place. Trouble was, she had no idea where to go once she got past the borders.
All she knew was that she needed to find the people from her dreams. It was important for reasons she couldn't fathom. Hell, she didn't even know if these were real people or if she was just losing her mind. Vin had to know, one way or the other, that was why she was on this quest.
Her train of thought was interrupted when a giant black dragon landed in front of her. A man was riding the dragon who gave off an air that reminded the Mistborn of the Lord Ruler.
“I'm sorry Mrs. Venture, but this is as far as you go.” The man said.
“Who are you and what do you want with me?” Vin demanded.
“My name is Galbatorix and I have been sent by forces that shall remain nameless to put a stop to your little quest.” Vin barely heard him, she was too busy staring at his dragon. It seemed familiar somehow...
“Shruikan.” The unfamiliar name tumbled from her lips and the dragon, who seemed to quiver with madness and pain seemed to have a moment of lucid clarity.
“Vin?” He growled. The dragon spoke as if he knew her, even though they'd never met, perhaps she wasn't crazy after all... Galbatorix's eyes widened.
“Destroy her Shruikan!” He commanded. The dragon lost the clarity in his eyes and moved to attack Vin.
“Do you remember Kat?” Vin blurted, she had no idea why she said it, the more she spoke to Shruikan the more flashes of foreign events filled her mind.
“Kat...rin...a...” Shruikan ground out, pausing in his attack.
“That's right, Katrina, I'm her mother.” Once again clarity began to come back to the dragon.
“Shruikan, I am your rider and I command you to destroy that woman!” Galbatorix said. Shruikan seemed to struggle against the command. It seemed Vin was making progress. If she could just keep pushing maybe he could break free of Galbatorix's control.
So the name of the game is this:
Vin is trying to break Shruikan from Galbatorix's control. She has her standard metals, Pewter, tin, iron, steel, zinc, brass, duralumin and three replacement vials.
Galbatorix is trying to keep Shurikan under has control. As such this will likely not devolve into a physical fight. If Vin can say the dragon to her side, she wins, if not, she loses.
