Scorpion was originally part of the Shirai Ryu clan of ninjas. He went be the name Hanzo Hasashi. Throughout his training he garnered the nickname "Sasori", which meant Scorpion. He was the clans champion and was honored as fighting for the Grandmaster of different occasions. By the age of 32, he was considered the best the Shirai Ryu had ever produced.
The Necromancer, Quan Chi hired the Shirai Ryu to steal a map that would tell Quan Chi the location of Shinnok's amulet. Unknown to the Shirai Ryu, Quan Chi had also hired the Lin Kuei to perform the same mission. The Lin Keui sent a ninja by the name of Bi-han aka Sub-Zero to achieve the mission. The two rival ninjas ran into one another while trying to recover the map. When the two ninjas clashed in battle, Sub-Zero emerged victorious killing Hanzo.
Due to his association with Quan Chi, when Hanzo died he was sent to the Neatherealm. Quan Chi then killed Hanzo's clan and family as payment to the Lin Kuei. While in the Neatherealm, Hanzo was reporn as the ninja spectre Scorpion. He was turned into an enforcer for Quan Chi. Upon his resurrection, Scorpion was informed by Quan Chi that Sub Zero had destroyed his clan and family.
Scorpion swore revenge on Sub-Zero. He later encountered Sub-Zero again when Sub-Zero was sent by Raiden to retrieve the Shinnok' amulet from Quan Chi. Again Scorpion was defeated. Humiliated and furious Scorpion vowed to kill Sub-Zero. He trained and prepared to kill Sub-Zero in his next oppurtunity, at the Mortal Kombat Tournament.
