Shepard and Joker stared at the wreckage that was once Nos Astra Spaceport.
The Asari ship called the Harbinger had crashed headlong into the city, taking off the top section of a building and leveling most of the spaceport. The remnants of the city’s law enforcement waited for them with Samara at the front. They had nearly been trapped at Detective Anaya’s old office before other officers had arrived and lent their assistance. With their biotic abilities and advanced weapons cleaning up the Necromorphs was easy.
So far they had scanned the crashed vessel and could not find any signs of the Marker. Shepard stepped off the Normandy’s landing platform and walked over to her old squad mate and the police officer. Anaya and Samara were both covered in bruises and cuts, and the former was removing a stained bandage from her thigh. “Shepard. It is good you again.” Despite looking and sounding exhausted, Samara still exhibited the same grace Shepard remembered from the last time they had met.
“You too, Samara. Are these all the survivors?” Shepard wasn’t expecting any good news from the Justicar, but she had to know just how big of a threat they were dealing with. Isaac had been very specific when describing a Necromorph infestation. “Yes. We tried to search for any others but they were most likely transformed into more of these abominations.”
She looked up at the Normandy. “If the Marker is still intact, would it not be prudent to move the wreckage of the Harbinger and destroy it now?” Shepard nodded and signaled for Samara’s allies to be evacuated for further medical and psychological treatment. But before she and Samara could further plan their next move, the platform beneath their feet trembled. “Samara, we...” An earsplitting crack interrupted Shepard before Anaya’s office exploded.
Samara grabbed Shepard and put up a biotic barrier to deflect whatever debris flew their way. Shepard looked up at the source of the explosion and stared in shock. A massive tentacle had emerged from underneath them and was sweeping across the docking area. The monstrosity had an organic look to it and was covered in grayish veins spewing a disgusting green liquid. The base was thick and had segmented layers of what looked like bone surrounding a black rocky object. The Marker.
Shepard pulled out the Arc Projector from her back and said, “Samara, signal the Normandy to fire at the creature’s base!” Samara followed her orders, and Shepard fired a blast that scorched the Marker’s gruesome ‘armor’. The Normandy’s cannons shredded the creature’s flesh further and the two soldiers retreated towards the Normandy. The massive Necromorph let loose a horrifying roar that caused even Shepard to tremble. “Shepard, get down!”
Out of the corner of her eye, Shepard saw a smaller appendage emerge from the Necromorph and swing in her direction. She tried to raise her weapon but knew it wouldn’t be ready in time. In a couple of seconds the barbed tentacle would go right through her. Before she was impaled her vision flashed blue and she sent tumbling out of the way. Shepard hit the ground with a grunt of pain, and was pulled to her feet by two Alliance soldiers. Looking back over at her squad mate Shepard saw Samara... with the tentacle sticking out of her chest.
“NO!” Shoving the two soldiers off Shepard activated her Omni-Blade and leapt for Samara. She sliced away the tentacle impaling Samara and pulled her down to the ground. Shepard applied any medi-gel she could as the Normandy’s barrage of the Marker continued. With another salvo, the Marker’s armor was shattered. The ancient artifact exploded and the rest of the Necromorph soon followed.
With the threat gone, Shepard turned down to Samara. “D*** it... Samara, stay with me! We’re going to get you onboard the ship. Everything’s... everything’s going to be alright.” The Justicar coughed up blood, clutching Shepard’s hand tightly. But as each second passed her grip loosened. Tears started to well up in Shepard’s eyes and she pleaded, “No. Don’t let go, Samara... don’t give up now!” Samara looked up, tears coming out of her own eyes. “Shepard... you are safe...” She weakly reached up and touched Shepard’s face. “...Do not be sad... This was the only way it could have ended for me... Fighting for the innocent... Protecting... my friend...”
Shepard turned and yelled hoarsely at the two soldiers. “Get a medic out here NOW!” The two ran back to the ship. But it was too late, and Shepard knew it. “Look at me...” Samara’s wavering voice drew her attention. The dying Asari took Shepard’s hand again. Through her tears Shepard could see her friend smiling despite her pain. “...Thank you...” Shepard laughed painfully. “For what?” The Justicar pulled her closer as she spoke more quietly. “For... everything... You helped me stop Morinth... You saved my family... You have given me... peace...” Samara’s gaze wavered, and her breathing stopped. As her hand fell from Shepard’s, Shepard saw the icy blue light in Samara’s eyes go out.
And she was gone.

The funeral was held on the Normandy’s main deck. All of Shepard’s past crewmembers and squad mates had gathered to pay tribute to their fallen friend. Shepard stood in front of the group dressed in all black. The others were dressed in black as well, with even the likes of Jack and Zaeed in their most formal wear. Each of them had their own different memories of the Justicar, their own stories to tell. But Samara’s daughter Falere decided that Shepard should be the one to speak.
“As we look back on the life of Samara, what do we see? We see a strong, determined woman who gave up everything to fight for what she believed in. Whether it was helping us fight the Reapers, protecting Falere, or being forced to end Morinth she didn’t lose sight of what was important; The Code she lived by. It takes a unique kind of person to suffer all that Samara did and not give up. And in the end, as long as she saved lives and fought injustice... her own death was a small price to pay.
I don’t know where she is now, or whether she can hear me. But if you can, Samara, I want to thank you. The time I spent with you reminded me that I couldn’t fight unless I had something to fight for. Tell Thane, Mordin, Anderson, Legion and the rest we said hello. Goodbye, Samara.
Find peace in the embrace of the Goddess.”
Afterwards the mourners began to spread out and socialize. Shepard pulled Urdnot Wrex off to the side. “Wrex, after the funeral is over we need to set a course for Tuchanka. A Krogan warlord found another Marker fragment about an hour ago and Alliance officials are trying to apprehend him. By now it’s probably taken over his mind completely. If he takes to your planet, who knows how bad things will get?”
Wrex grinned. “We kill him, and we destroy the d*** rock before it can corrupt any of my people. It’s a plan.” Shepard nodded and took the elevator to her cabin. Liara paused in her conversation with Tali and watched the doors close. But did not follow. She knew her love wanted to be alone.

You’re supposed to be in control, Jane. If you’d been a second faster then maybe you could have saved her. Another friend gone, and it’s your fault.
Shepard wept silently in her cabin while the Normandy traveled to Tuchanka to stop another infestation. Her other squad mates had went back to their own homes or bases to prepare for their next step if they found another Marker soon. But the closer the mission came the less prepared Shepard felt. Samara was dead, and now another unimaginable evil was going to tear apart everything she loved. It’s the Reapers all over again.
“I know how you feel.” Shepard jolted and saw Isaac Clarke waiting by her cabin door. “Get out.” Isaac didn’t budge. “No. I know that look, and I know how it feels to lose someone to those things. But I didn’t like to talk about it. I just kept it bottled up and it almost got me killed.” Shepard wiped her eyes and stood up. “Yeah? So you want met to spill my guts and break down completely?” Isaac smiled. “Yeah. Pretty much. If it makes things easier, Shepard, I’ll tell you my own sob story too.” Shepard didn’t know quite what to say. “You already told us everything, didn’t you?”
Isaac shrugged. “Well, not everything. I lost a few good people too when I was fighting those sons of b***es back in my reality. I guess I left that part out when I was talking to you and Miss Chambers. But I’m ready to share now.” Shepard paused for a few moments while she made her decision. Maybe Isaac did have more in common with her than she thought. “Fine. I’ll tell you some of my problems, but you share yours first.” Isaac sat down.
“Alright. There was this woman named Nicole Brennan...”
