As far as it pertains to database divisions, I'm somewhat neutral as I've just sort of gotten use to these categories as they were, that said, can someone give me a significant reason via example of how this idea would be beneficial to our activities here? Not trying to start a fight, I'm just curious on what basis you guys are making your judgements. On the topic of database management, as I've told D and the others in our conversation, I think what we can do is have what I call "cool down" periods, where addition slows or temporarily ceases so as to provide time for organizational matters. Deleting profiles to me doesn't work as A) it eliminates both obscure and well-known but not frequently used characters, and B) holds the potential of causing unnecessary tension among the community, that we'd be better off avoiding in this site's development. I too feel use to these categories. I'm comfortable with them which may be why I can navigate and interpret them so easily. I don't know how I feel about Ruinus' suggestion though, as it feels very bare to me. Almost like its too simple or stripping away what it is. But I do like where he was going. I think that some of the points of changing it in the first place are A) To make FoxFerret(Magnetic Fox or whatever you wanna call it) feel unique and independent from EF. And B) To raise activity and encourage more users to be more active on the site.

What about he Hastags? Wouldn't that help make finding characters much easier?

The hashtags have been having ... issues, so it may be awhile before they can be of any use for us.

We should get back to this soon, but what happens here may possibly depend on how the creation of the new FPL-esque section goes.
As for the subject at hand, going with fewer categories as opposed to more is an idea, but splitting up anime/manga might be tricky. I'm not all that knowledgeable on the culture, but of the dozens, possibly hundreds of anime/manga profiles I've added here, at least 90% of the animes involved have been derived from mangas. If we split it up, most of the profiles would likely end up going into the potential new comics or literature category.
Adding characters in categories based solely in what medium, genre, etc. they originated from can present its own set of problems as well. For example, there are some characters that originated from a certain that end up barely having any history in that area at all.

How about this, piggy backing off of Runius, but changing the wording:
Animation/Drawn (Comics, Cartoons, Anime) Sub-categories American Comics Cartoons Japanese Anime/Manga Games (Video Games, Card Games, Board Games) Sub Categories Video Games Card Games Board Games Web Games Live-Action (Tv series, movies, web shows) Sub Categories Internet Drama Action Fantasy Literature (Novels) Sub Categories Magic Science Fiction
As a template idea of course.

That could still use work. The comic sub sections should be renamed 'western comics' and 'eastern comics' if this were to happen. There are also many many other genres of literature out there, and that not even getting started on classical mythology and fictionalised versions of real life events. This task is a lot harder than I thought it would be, as there are so many things to take into account. I think that instead of changing the database categories, we should just add more. Pop culture is the only one that should be changed in my opinion, because it is difficult to define which characters should go in that category, since every character in the database is a part of pop culture. I think it just confuses things too much.

Okay, we may be close to figuring out a new layout for the Database, but I just wanted to add a couple of things:
- As it turns out, we actually can create sub-categories, so that's an option.
- As shown in other parts of this forum, we can also make summaries for existing categories to give a better idea about what should be posted within. This will also be useful for the final product on the Database.

I've always hated the anime/cartoon and comic/manga distinction. They are the exact same things, so why give them different categories or subcategories?
IF the argument is that manga and comics have different cultures around them then why not, at this point, make the distinction between Shooters and RPGs? Or between "hardcore" and "casual" gamers?
