Heishiro Mitsurugi
Heishiro Mitsurugi is the son of a Japanese farmer, who after suffering years of witnessing his homeland being ravaged by bandits and war, he decided to take up swordsmanship, becoming a samurai and eventually hired mercenary.
Learning of a new weapon, the firearm, and its ability to devastate the current Japanese armies, sought Soul Edge to counter it and encountered Taki during this time.
Unable to find the sword, he challenged a man armed with a rifle in frustration, and was shot in his right shoulder.
He gradually improved his fighting style to the point riflemen were no longer a threat, and after learning of Nightmare set out after him in order to find what he considered a worthy challenge, this being his motivation through the remainder of the series.
In Soulcalibur IV, after the awakening of the Hero King, Algol, Mitsurugi is one of the first warriors who confronts him, finding the Hero King to be a worthy opponent.
However, for unknown reasons, the fight is interrupted, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
He had also unknowingly make rival with Setsuka, after he mortally wounded her master during a battle that eventually led to his death, although he did not realize it until they fight sometime during the events of Soulcalibur IV, at which point Mitsurugi lost.
After the warring period of Japan had ended, Mitsurugi settled a quiet life as a farmer for seventeen years.
He regains his fighting spirit when he heard about Soul Calibur and goes on a journey to once again continue the battle with Algol that was left unfinished years before.
Mitsurugi was voted one of IGN's top fighters.
In a 2002 poll by Namco prior to the release of Soulcalibur II regarding their favorite character, Siegfried placed ninth with 2.5% of the tally, tied with Mitsurugi.
He has also appeared in Namco × Capcom as a playable character.
