Kiki
Kiki is the main character in the film Kiki's Delivery Service by Hayao Miyazaki, inspired by the novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono. She is a 13-year old witch who spends a year away from her village in a larger town in order to learn how to live independently by using and developing her magical abilities. In the Japanese version of the film, Kiki is voiced by Minami Takayama, whereas in the English versions of the film, she is voiced by Lisa Michelson in the version by Streamline Pictures, and by Kirsten Dunst in the Disney version of the film. Miyazaki intended Kiki to be a young girl with limited powers who faces an internal crisis of self-doubt as a means to find her own independence and identity. Other critics of the film have noted other themes emerging from Kiki's characterization, such as balancing traditional rituals and contemporary standards, and in particular, Kiki's loss of her ability to fly as a consequence of Kiki's insecurities.
