Fluttershy is a light yellow pegasus pony with teal eyes and a pink mane and tail. Her cutie mark is three pink butterflies. She speaks in a quiet, soft voice. She is sweet and calm, and is often very shy around others. However, she can become forceful and assertive if her friends are placed in danger. Fluttershy loves and cares for all animals and is willing to help them at any cost, but is very fearful of many things. Although she is a pegasus, she prefers to stay close to the ground, living in a cottage near the Everfree Forest instead of the sky city of Cloudsdale with the other pegasi. She has a pet rabbit named Angel. She possesses a special ability known as "The Stare", which allows her to intimidate the fiercest animals to the point of complete and total obedience and/or compliance. She has used this ability on several occasions against threatening creatures. She has the ability to become extremely assertive but rarely chooses to use it as she tends to lose control and become cruel as revealed in " Putting your hoof down". Sometimes she is shown to have a good knowledge of sewing and fashion and a talent in her beautiful singing voice, but she suffers from stage fright. She joins the Ponytones, a small choir group after overcoming her fear a little bit by performing privately in front of her friends. As a filly in " The Cutie Mark Chronicles" she was very weak and was knocked at the start of a race by Rainbow Dash and her opponents from Cloudsdale but was saved by a group of colorful butterflies who caught her before she hit the ground. While she was marveling at the world on the ground which she had never seen before, Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom scared the animals and upon comforting them, she learned that she could communicate with animals on some level, thus earning her cutie mark. Fluttershy represents the Element of Kindness. According to an official poll on the Hub Network website, Fluttershy was voted the most popular pony.

In the Equestria girls movie, Fluttershy shares similarities with her counterpart. She wears a white singlet with a light green skirt with her cutie mark on it, green tall shoes and a butterfly clip on her hair. She was first seen being bullied by Sunset Shimmer until Twilight confronted her and introduced themselves with references from the Season 1 premiere. She was later seen in the cafeteria advising Twilight to not run for the princess of the fall formal although the latter still ran for it. After being reunited with the others under Twilight's guidance she helped in every way she could to help her win the crown back. She also brought 3 animals along with her including an angel-like bunny. In her human-ponyfied form, she has yellow pony ears, hair extension, pegasus wings and sparkle effects on her dress. In the upcoming Sequel Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, she is seen playing the tambourine in the band.

Flutterbat
During the events of Bats!, Twilight accidentally transfers the vampire fruit bats desires into Fluttershy, causing her to transform into a vampire bat-pony hybrid. As part of this transformation, she gains fangs, bat wings, red eyes, and bat-like ears, and her cutie mark changes into three pink bats. While in this form, Fluttershy easily outmaneuvers the rest of her friends in the air by using her heightened bat-like senses, while at the same time sucking the juice out of apples and spitting out their seeds. Twilight eventually manages to restore her.
