Rarity is a silvery-white unicorn pony with blue eyes, and a violet mane and tail that are combed in wavy curls and a cutie mark made of three cyan diamonds. She speaks with a Mid-Atlantic accent. She is a professional fashion designer and seamstress at her own dressmaking shop, the Carousel Boutique. She is very stylish and beautiful, wears make-up and false eyelashes, takes great interest in fashion and clothing design as an artist and small business owner, and often tries to make herself the center of attention. She considers herself a proper lady, often acting in a sophisticated manner. Once hoping to marry her former crush Prince Blueblood, she found him rude and self-centered. Rarity is Sweetie Belle's older sister, and often takes care of her when her parents are away. She represents the Element of Generosity and has a Persian cat named Opalescence. Despite her being a talented dressmaker, her special talent is finding gems using her horn, which earns her her cutie mark, as revealed in the Episode "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" and in "A Dog and Pony Show". She is also part of the ponytones, a small choir group whom fluttershy soon joins.

In the Equestria Girls movie, Rarity's counterpart shares similarities with her. She wears a faded light blue shirt with a skirt which like Twilight's, has her cutie mark on it. She also wears two gold wrist bands and diamond shaped hair clips. Driven by Sunset machinations, she breaks up with the other counterparts but was reunited under Twilight's guidance and helped her gain back the crown. In her human-ponified form, she has pony ears, a hair extension and sparkle effect on her dress. In the upcoming sequel Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, she was seen making a grand entrance by kneeling on a grand piano being pushed by the human version of the diamond dogs in the exclusive trailer. She is also seen playing the keytar in the band.

Nightmare Rarity in The IDW Comic Book
Twilight Sparkle and her friends have been suffering from nightmares for a week, and decide to hold a slumber party together to figure out what is going on. During the night, Rarity is abducted by a dark miasma. The others contact Princess Celestia, who comes to Ponyville with her sister Princess Luna. Luna explains that Rarity has been taken by the same forces that transformed her into the evil Nightmare Moon to serve as their queen. Accompanied by Luna and Spike, the five friends venture to the Nightmare Dreamscape on the moon where Rarity has been taken. Meanwhile, Rarity is convinced by the nightmare forces that her friends care little for her.

Upon her friends' arrival, they find that Rarity has been transformed into the nightmare forces' new queen, Nightmare Rarity. The friends are overwhelmed by the nightmare forces and locked up. Twilight urges Luna to return to Ponyville to prepare the citizens there. Spike manages to elude Nightmare Rarity as she departs for Ponyville with her forces, and rescues the others. Luna and the other citizens of Ponyville defend themselves against Nightmare Rarity, giving enough time for Twilight, Spike, and the others to arrive. Using the power of their friendship, the friends revert the corrupted nightmare creatures into docile moon creatures. They turn this and their thoughts of Rarity to Nightmare Rarity, and finally dispel the evil spirit. Luna and the moon creatures thank the ponies for their help before leaving, while Rarity is thankful for her friends' support.
