Palpatine
Palpatine is a fictional character and the main antagonist of the Star Wars saga.
In the original trilogy, he appears as the aged, pale-faced Emperor of the Galactic Empire. While overseeing the final stages of the Galactic Civil War between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, he is ultimately killed by Darth Vader.
In the prequel trilogy, he is a middle-aged politician of the Galactic Republic who rises to power through deception and treachery. As the Senator from Naboo and then the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, his public persona outwardly behaves like a well-intentioned public servant and supporter of democracy. But underneath is his true identity: Dark Lord of the Sith known as Darth Sidious. While behind the scenes, he has Darth Maul reveal the Sith's existence for the first time in 1,000 years, Darth Tyranus instigate the Clone Wars, and ultimately destroys the Jedi by converting the Republic into a brutal totalitarian regime.
Since the initial theatrical run of Star Wars, he has become a symbol of evil and sinister deception in popular culture.
In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, the Emperor doesn't appear but is mentioned as the ruler of the Empire by Grand Moff Tarkin during a meeting with his council on the Death Star. There, Tarkin explains to his council that the Emperor has dissolved the Galactic Senate (due to increasing support for the Rebel Alliance) and given direct control to the regional governors of the star systems controlled by the Empire.
In Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, the Emperor appears for the first time as the dark side master of Darth Vader. The Emperor contacts Vader via holographic communication to tell him of a "great disturbance in the Force".
