In a dimension cut off from all others a man sat in a recliner. This man never gave his true name when he met other beings such as himself he was simply known as Nesh. The room Nesh was in had seen better days. It was lined with trophies of past glory.
Everything in the room laid dusty and unused, it had for some time, since the death of the electric ferret. Nesh had a very specific powerset. He could make beings from different universes battle each other. All in all it was great entertainment, many had this ability but since the death of the ferret it had fallen into disuse. Nesh himself had gone very quiet, lacking the spark needed to use his powers.
Then came a new patron the magnetic fox. It was an offspring of sorts of the electric ferret though its cult had far fewer followers than its predecessor. Nesh had joined this new organization but he hadn’t really done much of anything there. Perhaps it was time to change that.
Yes, it was time to throw his hat back in the ring so to speak. What should his comeback be? Something simple or should it be grand and complex? Simple he decided, he was a bit out of practice and wasn’t sure he could still pull this off like he used to. One on one would have to do for now. He needed a nice even fight, something that bore his distinctive mark.
Nesh smirked, he just the thing. A girl fight never hurt anyone, well except the girls, but he’d use copies anyway, wouldn’t want to disrupt timelines for a death fight. He pulled out his fluorescent green MagneticFox membership card and smiled. “We’re back baby.”
Vin woke up in a strange place. Very strange, first and foremost there was no mist out despite the sun being down and she could see the stars clearly. Wherever this was it clearly wasn’t home. Still she was here so the best thing to do was explore. She reached out mentally and burned iron, steel, tin, pewter, and copper. Five of the basic Allomantic metals. Iron and steel would allow her to Pull and Push on metals respectively while tin would enhance her senses, and pewter her physical capabilities. Copper would hide her Allomancy from any Seekers or in other words Allomancers that burned bronze. She dropped a copper clip to the ground and Pushed against it with steel. Since the coin had nowhere to go Vin was pushed upward directly away from the coin.
The Mistborn scanned the translucent blue lines that sprang from her chest as a result of her iron and steel. They pointed to all sorts of metal. She selected a window claspe and Pulled on it with iron turning her jump into a graceful arc that landed her on the roof of a building. The architecture here was strange as well but at least the city had enough metal to make travel by iron and steel viable.
Vin had no particular destination as she moved alone, just trying to get a grip on her new surroundings. Everything here was so foreign it truly bewildered her. The lack of the swirling mist was disconcerting but the familiar sound of her fluttering mistcloak calmed her nerves, if only slightly.
The Mistborn was drawn out of her thoughts when a scream pierced the night. On instinct Vin followed her tin enhanced ears to an alleyway. Perched on top of a wooden roof she could see three men had a woman cornered. It didn’t take much imagination to figure out what the men planned to do with her. Maybe this place wasn’t so alien after all.
Not so long ago, only a few years in fact, before she’d met Kelsier, Vin would’ve just moved on. This sort of thing happened every day after all; it wasn’t her problem. Now though, now she dropped a coin to the street and jumped down Pushing on it to slow her descent.
“Let her go.” Vin said coolly. All the men were skinny and let of that greasy feel that criminals often did. The three looked very similar, brothers perhaps? The tallest one, the leader and presumably the oldest turned toward her.
“And just what are you going to do about it?” He asked. Vin narrowed her eyes.
“You don’t want to find out.”
“Oh yeah, try us.” The man challenged.” Vin unsheathed an obsidian dagger and lunged quicker than the man could react, slashing his throat and leaving him to a gurgling demise. What happened next took her completely by surprise. Another one of the men threw fire at her. The sudden light stunned her tin enhanced eyes and Vin was hit though there was no real damage thanks to her pewter.
The Mistborn recovered quickly. The two men threw more fire but she leaped up and backward, Pushing off the coin she had dropped earlier. Her jump took her back on to the rooftop and away from the fire attacks. She took out two more coins from her coin pouch dropped each of the remaining men with a coin to the head. The woman she’d come to save had already fled. Vin still had a lot of questions about where she was, more than when she started but at least the streets were a little safer.
Toph scowled as she examined another pair of bodies. Killed by coins. That was the third time this week they’d found people killed by coins. Strictly speaking it wasn’t her job to investigate such things. Yu Dao was a former Fire Nation colony in Earth Kingdom and one of the few places after the war where they actually lived together in peace; though like all ciies it had its crime problems. Toph had taken up residence here to start the Bei Fong Metalbending Academy. It was that very Metalbending that had her looking into these murders.
One of her teaching methods was to have her students remotely Metalbend coins. It would get something like the effect of what she was seeing here. Someone was using Metalbending to commit these crimes and Toph had already ruled out all of her students. Could someone else have mastered the art independently?
The people that were being killed were common criminals so it wasn’t like this person was giving her school a bad name, not that local law enforcement was all that happy with them. The townspeople generally applauded this vigilante. Still it wasn’t how Toph wanted her school, her art to be represented. They weren’t a bunch of vigilantes.
So this person whoever they were had to be taken down. So Toph had devised a very simple trap. That night she went to one of the more crime ridden parts of town where the mysterious Metalbender was likely to show up. She waited and stopped some would-be rapists non-lethally. As hopped someone dropped from the rooftops after the plink of something metallic hitting the road. A woman, a very short adult by the look of things.
“I take it you’re the one who’s been giving my school a bad name.” Toph said.
“Your… school? I have no idea what you’re talking about.” The woman said. Toph could sense no deception but after Azula she’d learned not to completely rely on her seismic sense for these things.
“You’ve been killing people with Metalbending. How are you able to Metalbend; I didn’t teach you.
“Again I have no idea what you are talking about. I’ve never heard of Metalbending.” Toph felt strangely compelled to believe the woman; she almost let her go, except she noticed something.
“But you don’t deny you’ve been killing people.”
“Common criminals the streets are safer because of me.”
“That’s not your job and you’ve been using Metalbending, an art I invented to do it. How did you learn it? I want answers, now!” To emphasize her point Toph Earthbent a good sized rock at the woman who dodged by jumping into the air. “Great,” Toph muttered, “I’ve got another Twinketoes on my hands.”
So we have Toph Beifong. Some time shortly after the The Search comic.
